The pack you bought is the pack you keep.
A Venture Gear piece is meant to come home for repair, not replacement. Every item that leaves the shop does so with a lifetime promise that reads short and stays short: you wear it out, you send it back, I make it whole, I send it home. The machinery of big-company returns — RMAs, portals, prepaid labels, tracking dashboards — is nowhere here. Neither is the loophole-riddled fine print that such machinery usually hides.
[ A ] How a return works
Pack it flat in a flat-rate box.
Empty the pack. Pull out the HDPE frame sheet if it's in there — it'll travel separately under the bedroll. Fold the roll-top tight. A medium flat-rate box holds a Model 03 easily; a large holds everything I've ever made. Do not worry about "proper" packing material. Newsprint works. Old t-shirts work. So does the pack itself, stuffed with whatever's light and clean.
Tuck a note in the lid pocket.
The lid pocket is the best mailbox in the business. Pencil on whatever paper — an index card, the back of a boarding pass, a torn sheet from a trail journal. Tell me: what's wrong, where you'd like it back, and what season you'd like it back by if it matters. The less ambiguous the note, the faster the work.
Send it to the shop.
Mailing address goes on the acknowledgment card tucked under the lid-liner when the piece first went out. If you've lost it, write VG Repairs on the envelope to the standing-list PO box in my township; the postmaster will know. Flat-rate runs you about $18 as of this spring.
Wait out the bench queue.
Repairs join the bench queue in the order they arrive. A rewax is 2–3 days on the bench. A seam rebuild is a week. A full strip-and-rebuild on a Model 03 that's seen ten hard seasons can take three. I'll mail you a pencil-drawn postcard when the work starts, and another when the box ships home. No tracking email. No status dashboard. One card, two cards.
Pay, or don't.
Most repairs — stitch work, bar-tack resets, hardware swaps on pieces still under my hand, full re-waxes of a shell — come home with no invoice. Larger parts replacements (new bridle leather straps, a replacement G-hook, a fresh wool liner on a Bedroll Long) get an invoice on paper, mailed a week after the box, payable by check whenever it reaches you. I've never charged a late fee and I never will.
Write back, when you're back.
Postcard in the lid pocket when the repaired piece arrives: how does it ride? If the answer is anything other than "same as before," that's news I want on the bench ledger.
◆ One honest caveat ◆
Three things I can't fix: canvas that has mildewed through the weave (the wax won't rebond), hardware I didn't originally install (the stitch geometry is different), and straps that someone has re-dyed with boot polish (the polish eats the saddle stitch from inside out). If any of those apply, send it anyway — I'll tell you on a pencil postcard whether it's worth rebuilding or time to retire it into a shoulder bag for the next generation.
